Girls Who Code encourages young women in CS through educational outreach efforts, and provides mentorship and education events to younger girls. In 2019 our weekly club taught 9 students animation with JavaScript and robotics with Lego Mindstorms. Girls Who Code is a national non-profit organization leading the movement to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st century opportunities. WiCS oversees one of the largest mentorship programs on campus, where each semester, over 140 mentees are paired with upper-class mentors to form bonds and friendship, based on their interests and backgrounds. Newer WiCS members receive guidance and support on how to navigate college, career-recruiting, social life, and beyond.
Over 200 women in tech participate in our mentorships program, and many have mentioned that WiCS Mentorships has been one of their most fulfilling college experiences. Older students have found it extremely worthwhile to give back to the Harvard community, while first-years and sophomores have really appreciated the many resources that our program offers, such as internship preparation, class advice, and the continued encouragement from other women in tech.
WiCS hosts company tech talks, info sessions, panels, and other recruiting events throughout the year, for a total of roughly 15 events per month. These events provide programming at all levels and educational and professional development to both our members and other students.
WiCS offers technical workshops to supplement computer science coursework, and publicizes internship opportunities through email lists and newsletters.
WiCS Community creates a welcoming environment where students are encouraged to support each other and build relationships with one another as well as with faculty in order to provide a happier and more stable CS experience! Events include “Food From Home” happy hours, faculty-student events, and holiday-themed events.
The Advocacy Committee researches the gender gap in technology and gathers resources for others to learn more about these issues. Harvard WiCS created this committee in 2015.
The Harvard WECode (Women Engineers Code) Conference is the largest student-run conference in the world celebrating women engineers. Each year, approximately 800 female students attend. We are dedicated to expanding the skills, network, and community of technical women worldwide, bringing together a diverse group of engineers over the course of three days to exchange ideas and conversations. Attendees enjoy empowering keynotes, intimate workshops, and the opportunity to mingle with industry leaders from tech companies. WECode hosts a large Sponsor Opportunities Career Fair during the conference, connecting sponsors with top students.
In 2020, a team from Harvard WiCS began
collaborating with ten other college
campuses across the United States on the
Percentage Project, a data-driven social
media campaign that shares the
multifaceted experiences of students in
STEM concentrations with quotes from
interviews, photography, and data from a
larger survey. We hope that these
interviews can provide new perspectives on
what it means to be a minority in tech,
telling the stories behind the statistics and
challenging the CS department to do better.
WiCS Projects were established to give board directors and community members space and opportunities to explore projects that are important to larger WiCS community, diversity, inclusion, and equity.
